Lalu Prasad Yadav was born on 2 March 1959 in a Yadav family of traders and land-owners. He studied at the D.A.V. College, Birsa Munda (1972-78) and Ranchi University (1978-79). He became a member of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) at the age of 17
He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Jhanjharpur (Lok Sabha constituency) and was elected to Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) in 2004. Lalu Prasad Yadav is the Chief Minister of Bihar since October 2005, following the resignation of Rabri Devi, who was elected as the Chief Minister in 2003. Lalu Prasad Yadav has also been elected as the Leader of RJD in Bihar Legislative Assembly.
